I discovered Nina Simone in my late teens, on a jazz compilation. I always thought the voice was that of a man’s, so deep and lusty. When I found out it was Nina Simone I did all I could to find out more about this woman. I was fortunate enough to see her perform in Chicago in 2000 with her daughter. It was a very moving performance. My favorite song of hers is “Baubles, Bangles and Beads”. Appropriate, right?
