I thought I would meet this woman before she left the earth. I thought I would be able to tell her how powerful her words are, how much she influenced me as a writer, a reader and a woman. I won’t ever get to say this to her. She left this earth on September 28th, 2016.
Gloria Naylor was a daughter, a friend and a writer. She used her writing to tell the most beautiful stories of black love and conflict. She humanized black women, making them them the complicated, loving and misunderstood women they are. Words really can’t express how much her work has influenced mine, especially her beautifully written novel, Momma Day. Naylor created a small community with her work, each novel intertwining with the next, full of brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors.
I’ve never met her but love her. I’m not sure where I would be without her beautiful work in this world. You will be missed.
